 Tiny URL -
- Tiny URL, a web service to make long URLs tiny
Long links (URLs) in emails often break when sent, and may cause the recipient the work to cut and paste it back together. Tiny URL is a web service that will create a tiny URL from a long one that will not break in email postings and does not expire. Senders just go to Tiny URL, enter the long URL into a text field (labelled "Enter a long URL to make tiny:") and activate the button "Make TinyURL!". TinyURL will return a tiny (really short) URL that you can paste into your eMail. When recipients use the short URL, TinyURL will automatically expand it and redirect the browser to the original URL. Browsers can be configured (using cookies) that Tiny URL will show the expanded URL and prompt for confirmation before redirecting. An extremely useful service!

 Software Tools
|
|
Note: Items marked with "free" are free software or service offers (usually only for personal use), "$" means shareware. Most of the software packages are designed for Windows 95 and upwards (98, ME, NT, 2000, XP), although some are also available for other OS platforms (like Firefox).
|
 Firefox 2.x (free) -
- The Firefox browser
is my favourite web browser since version 1.0.3 (released April, 2005). I find it really powerful (e. g., it lets you manage the download of cookies and images, and also what JavaScript may do on your screen). It adheres strictly to the published WWW standards, like the interpretation of HTML tags and CSS, it is easy to use ... and it is definitely ActiveX-proof!
|
 AntiVir Personal Edition(free) -
- A virus scanner, free of charge
A package, containing a foreground (on-demand) scanner (AntiVir) as well as a background (on-access) scanner (AVGuard). Convenient Internet update function for virus definitions as well as the application itself (pops up a dialog when the relevant files are one week old or older). Free for personal use.

 EditPlus
($) -
- A powerful and versatile, syntax-aware text editor for Windows
For creating HTML web pages, I have found no other text editor that comes near to EditPlus. It features syntax highlighting, multiple edit windows, an integrated grep function, HTML conversion functions and more powerful functions that are intuitively and comfortable to use. Is easily extensible for other file types (e. g., C++) by simply adding a configuration file. Great shareware from South Korea!
|
 Xenu Link-Sleuth (free) -
- A free link checker
A Windows application that is powerful and easy to use and can check web sites (the own or other ;-) for invalid links quickly and completely. This check can be run locally or on the uploaded site, the check of external links can be turned on or off separately. The report also offers interesting additional information, like orphaned files (only on the local file system) or automatic redirects. Very useful!
|
 Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall
($) -
- A free software firewall
that runs on your local machine and offers highly customizable filtering of incoming as well as outgoing traffic. Presents all of your unused TCP and UDP port numbers as nonexistent to the Internet and logs connection attempts. Free for personal use. Really recommendable!

Interlude Retreat - The cybermonks' retreat on the Internet
The cybermonks (i. e., the people running this web) have set up an inspiring, interreligious web site - small but with fine content. I have found that their thought of the day has kept inspiring me over the years. There is also an interesting archive on topics to meditate about and a book list. A valuable retreat in the midst of the Internet's market cries.

BuddhaNet - A Buddhist web site from Australia
BuddhaNet is a not-for-profit organisation affiliated with the Buddha Dharma Education Association Inc., that was first established in 1984 as a Vipassana Meditation Centre in Sydney by the Australian meditation monk Ven. Pannyavaro. This is a web site full of information about all branches of Buddism, including audio and graphics archives. According to the information on this web site, Buddhism is the fastest growing religion in Australia.

A collection Om graphics in various Sanskrit forms. Set up by this web site's author.

Fred Espenak's Eclipse Home Page -
- The authoritative web site on solar and lunar eclipses
Dr. Espenak works at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and is in my opinon one of the world's leading authorities on solar eclipses. For Germany's total eclipse on August 11th 1999, I got the most useful and qualified advance information here. Don't miss this pages! He has also written a very interesting book on solar eclipses, covering the years 1986 - 2035.

 Fourmilab -
- A diverse amateur-scientific web site by Adobe's co-founder John Walker
John Walker has retreated to Switzerland to simply do what he likes: science, programming, writing and more. There is a wealth of information online. Wether you are interested in astronomy or fractal screen savers - you'll surely get hooked. One of the best personally produced home pages that I have ever seen!
|
 Scientific American Magazine -
- A popular, very well-made monthly scientific magazine
that covers a wide range of topics from everyday science, astronomy, technology, history of science and its protagonists to cosmology and quantum theory. It's definitely worth the price! The book reviews pointed me to some really interesting (including fictional).

  Weather Pixie -
- Web Site with very nice weather report pixies
Lets you choose a location (usually at an airport) and shows you its current weather conditions, consisting of temperature, relative humidity (if available), wind direction and speed, atmospheric pressure (mm Hg), time of weather report, precipitation/cloud status, moon phase and daylight, along with a nice weather girl or boy who is dressed depending on the current temperature. Provides also HTML code to include your own customized weather pixie on your web site. Real Fun!
To the left is the current weather pixie for my home location (near the airport in Stuttgart, Germany).

 FedCon -
- Web Site about the "Federation Convention", the biggest meeting of Star Trek fans in Germany (or even Europe)
Because of my long-standing interest in Star Trek, I was surprised that, at the beginning of 2005, the decision was taken in the U.S.A. to discontinue the production of the current Star Trek TV episodes already in spring (the last episode aired in the USA on May 13th, 2005). Possibly, a decade-long success story has therefore come to an end and will soon be history (or already is). Nevertheless -or maybe exactly because of that- I find it very astonishing and estimable how Star Trek has been so interesting and successful for such a long time (nearly 40 years). As yet, I have joined the "Federation Convention", short "FedCon", the biggest, Germany-wide meeting of Star Trek-Fans 2 times (in 2002 and 2005), and I found it very interesting again and again, despite its flaws (show business and the making of money). The next FedCon (FedCon XVII) is going to take place in Bonn, Germany, from April 18th until April 20th, 2008.

 1001 Postcards -
- Everything around sending and receiving electronic postcards
In my opinion, this web site offers the ultimate range of free electronic postcards: choose from a large number of pictures (static or animated), backgrounds patterns and Midi background music. The recipient will receive a nice eMail with a link to his/her personal postcard's URL. Powerful functions for previewing, distributing, replying to postcards. Recommendable!

Ghosttown - - Pictures of the ghost town of Chernobyl and its surroundings
Elena is a young woman from Kiev who has a powerful motorbike. To go full speed, she sometimes drives through the ghost town of Chernobyl and its environs, because the roads are empty. This region is virtually completely abandoned and decaying since the nuclear accident on April 26th, 1986. Her father is a physicist and so she is equipped with some knowledge about radioactivity, a Geiger counter and a special permit to enter the zone. She has taken impressive and disturbing pictures (on more than 20 web pages) that are especially eerie because everyone knows that they are real. Although the situation could be considered "only" the afterglow of the accident, for me it is like still looking into the heart of the catastrophe.
